Puppy Kindergarten

This 5 week puppy training program is designed for puppy's ranging from 7 weeks of age up to 6 months. At 7 weeks a puppy is very impressionable and has the capacity to start developing bonds with other animals and people. The puppy is now extremely aware of its environment and will start formulating lifelong associations to various stimuli. It is designed to offer you and your puppy a customized combination of orientation, problem solving, obedience and socialization to meet the needs your situation demands.

Some puppies may already be adequately prepared for more components found in the "Basic Obedience" program and some may benefit with more emphasis on socialization and housetraining. During the "In-Home Evaluation" we would customize a program that best suits your individual situation.

For puppies under 16 weeks of age, the primary focus will be on socialization during the 3 "critical developmental" periods which begin at 6 to 7 weeks of age.

1.  First Fear Imprint Period begins when the puppy is between 6 and 10 weeks old.  During this period, young puppies are extremely impressionable and sensitive to both positive and negative environmental experiences.
2.  Optimum Bonding Period begins at about 7 weeks.  This is the time during which a puppy is most impressionable and open to bonding with other dogs and  people. Interactive experiences with humans should be positive, mild and gentle.  Your puppy will be gently exposed to new things at its own pace to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
3.  General Socialization Period occurs from 7 to 16 weeks of age.  During this period, we will socialize your puppy to as many new and varied situations as possible.  Proper socialization is probably the single most important thing that can be done to guard against the more serious behavior problems that develop.

You will be undertaking a "guided tour" as your puppy progresses through these developmental periods.

Solutions to curtail common puppy behaviors such as "nipping", "inappropriate chewing" and "good house manners" will be addressed along with techniques for proper "crate training" and "housetraining". We begin the basics of obedience training with "positive reinforcement only" methods during this program. Obedience training will develop confidence and communicate to the puppy that it has the security of a benevolent leader.

While some puppies may be sufficiently developed to take on more obedience, everyone will receive instruction on understanding pack leadership skills, a puppy's body language, rituals and socialization. This customized program will give you the opportunity to develop a happy and fulfilling relationship for years to come while avoiding the onset of many problem behaviors that commonly develop.
